Flea and Tick Topical Treatments

We all want to protect our pets from serious flea and tick borne illnesses, and topical treatments can help.  However, when you reach for the next flea and tick treatment, be sure you understand and follow instructions carefully.  Problems can arise from applying a treatment specifically designed for one animal to another and from applying too strong a dosage for your pet’s size.  Reactions to the treatments can range from mild skin irritation and hair loss to vomiting, trembling, and seizures.  Cats are more likely to suffer adverse reactions when treatments are not properly applied.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has noted an increase in reports of side effects in pets following application of topical pesticides for fleas and ticks.  The EPA plans to step up efforts to label and test treatments, restrict ingredients that are likely to cause harmful side effects, and to require manufacturers to provide clear instructions for use and more detail on proper dosage by animal weight.    Consult your vet for the most appropriate protocol for your pet.

Keep Your Pets Safe From Chemicals

Insect repellents, rodennt bait traps, and lawn and garden chemicals are only a few of the many substances that may be ingested by pets.  Keep chemicals away from pets, and avoid areas you suspect have been treated with insecticides.  If you suspect your pet has eaten a poisonous substance, call us at 808-689-1797.  You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.
